into applications for humans to play everywhere.

Etymology: From Latin gnoma which means "Knowledge". It also means "Earth dweller" (Latin genomus).

Gnomo in other languages: Portuguese: gnomo (pt) m, gnomo (br) m,  Spanish: duende m; pigmeo m; gnomo m, Italian: gnomo (it) m, German: Gnom (de) m, Dutch: kabouter (nl) m, Finnish: maahinen (fi), peikko (fi), Czech: skřítek (cs) m, Esperanto: gnomo (eo), Catalan: gnom (ca) m, follet (ca) m. Gnomes are a very widespread species that are known to a number of human races. Germans name them Erdmanleins, except in the Alpine areas, where they are called Heinzemannchens. In Denmark and Norway they are Nisse Nissen is a Swedish variation of Nisse. In Brittany they are called Nains.  The Finns call them Tontti and Foddenskkmaend is their name in Iceland. The Polish call them by the familiar Gnom. Bulgaria and Albania, however, use Dudje. In Hungary, Yugoslavia, and Czechoslovakia, Gnomes are called Mano. The Dutch use Kabouter and the Belgians use Skritek. Switzerland and Luxembourg use the same name, Kleinmanneken, which means "little men." Domovoi Djedoes is used in western Russia.  (2)

Gnomes correspond with the Earth and all of its aspects. They are associated with the direction north. Ancient legend talks of armies of Gnomes to insure the stability of Earth. As their name suggests, Gnomes are the ones with the power knowledge of the Earth.  Ancient mystics called upon Gnomes as an invocation of the properties of Earth in rituals. Gnome meaning in mythology can be linked to Geb, the Egyptian Earth god, as well as Kubera from India who is a hoarder of precious metals, dazzling diamonds, and other sparkling bits nestled in the folds of Earth. Gnomes are symbols of the Earth. They encourage stability, grounding and offer a rooting quality to our human experience. They are not without their wiles. Part of the levity of these little dudes comes from an innate liveliness that they imbue. They love their Mother (Earth), and are in turn, loved back by her. In fact, legend indicates they are dastardly in conniving tricks on those who would fool with their "Mother" Nature. (Translation: Gnomes have zero-tolerance for Earth rape). (3)
